The 1960s were a good time for the economy, supported by the fact that EU countries no longer collect tariffs when they trade with each other. They also agree on a common control over food production, so that everyone now has enough to eat – and soon there will even be surpluses of agricultural products. May 1968 became famous for the student riots in Paris, and many changes in society and behavior were associated with the so-called „68 generation“. The EEC was also known as a common market in English-speaking countries and was sometimes referred to as the European Community even before it was officially renamed in 1993. The Member States shall be represented in one way or another in each institution. The Council is also composed of a national minister representing their national government. Each state also has the right to a European Commissioner, although they do not represent their national interest within the European Commission, but within the Community. Before 2004, the largest members (France, Germany, Italy and the United Kingdom) had two Commissioners. In the European Parliament, MEPs are allocated a certain number of seats relative to their population, but these (since 1979) have been elected by direct universal suffrage and they sit according to their political affiliation and not of national origin. Most other institutions, including the Court of Justice of the European Communities, have some form of national distribution of their members. Greece ran again for accession to the Community on 12 June 1975, after the restoration of democracy, and acceded to the Community on 1 January 1981. [13] After Greece and its own democratic restoration, Spain and Portugal applied to the Communities in 1977 and united on 1 January 1986.

[14] In 1987, Turkey formally applied for membership of the Community and initiated the longest application procedure for each country. The Treaty of Paris, which created the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC), was signed in 1951. It was an international community based on supranationalism and international law to help the European economy and prevent future wars by integrating its members. The Maastricht Treaty entered into force on 1 November 1993 and the European Union (EU) replaced the EC. The treaty created the euro, which is supposed to be the single currency for the EU. The euro made its debut on 1 January 1999. Denmark and the United Kingdom have negotiated opt-out provisions allowing them to keep their own currency. The Treaty of Rome stipulated that the European Parliament was to be elected by direct universal suffrage, which required the Council to first agree on a common voting system.

The Council hesitated on this issue and the Parliament remained appointed[8] French President Charles de Gaulle was particularly active in blocking the development of the Parliament, since he only obtained budgetary powers after his resignation.
